Program S Brings Professional Opportunities to an Air Force Wife

Program S Brings Professional Opportunities to an Air Force WifeProgram S Brings Professional Opportunities to an Air Force WifeProgram S Brings Professional Opportunities to an Air Force Wife By Kathryn Troutman, Published September 12, 2017As the spouse of an Air Force technical sergeant, Jennifer Primus knows the drill Receive a PCS (permanent change of station) order, pack up, relocate, look for a new job in an unfamiliar community, repeat. Then, in 2016, Primus learned of Program S the Military Spouse Preference Program and it has already shown zu sich much promise as a pathway to professional opportunities with the Department of Defense.Join Our Free Webinar about Program SRegister NowBut lets back up and learn mora about Primus and her journey, because ultimately Program S is about people, not the bureaucratic details of federal employment.Years ago, Primus, her husband and their three small children were stationed in New Mexico, where she worked as a human resources assistant at a local college. Then in November 2011, they received a PCS order that took them to Okinawa, Japan, where they welcomed two more babies to the family.I stay home with each child until they reach preschool age, so I have a lot of employment gaps, says Primus. Of course, some private employers show understanding of military families situations, and some do not.The next arrival, in July 2016, welchesnt a sixth child, but rather another PCS order, destination Robins Air Force Base, just outside Warner Robins, Georgia. Primus believed there would be ample professional opportunities on the base, which employs more than 25,000 civilians and military members, making it the largest industrial complex in the state.I knew I wanted to work on base for job stability and the good benefits, says Primus. Program S kept coming up in my Google searches, though I didnt learn about the program until last year. Also recurring in those searches was The Resume Place, so she got in touch with us. Kathry n responded the next day and walked me through Program S, how to contact the HRO human resources officer on base, and how to register. Within two days I was registered with the program. The very next month, Primus matched for a job as a DoD secretary. Although Program S gives registrants noncompetitive status for job openings and ranks their preference very highly, there was, in fact, competition for the job two other military spouses, one of whom was offered the position. But the beauty of Program S is that, as long as applicants keep up with their obligations, they will continue to be considered for a match. I recently received another match for HR assistant, an even better role for me, a couple of weeks ago, says Primus. It will probably be another month before I hear anything about that one.Late last year, Program S became even more accessible President Barack Obama signed into law a measure striking the rule that military spouses must register with the program with two years of r elocating. Now theres no time limit.Whats the bottom line for military spouses in situations like Primus? Program S has its complexities, but if you connect with a couple of key resources, put a few critical tasks on your calendar and just keep putting one foot in front of the other, youre much likely to find success. Heres an official Program S fact sheet.Primus does have choice words of advice for military spouses seeking professional employment after a PCS relocation Be persistent. The Program S process is daunting, and it can take a long time to get a job. So, maintain contact with your HRO so they keep you in mind. I recommend volunteering in the unit where youre trying to get a job Ive volunteered to strengthen my resume and network. Its your best way to get a foot in the door. Will Primus receive an offer for the HR job she recently matched? How to Get a Medical Waiver to Join the Military

How to Get a Medical Waiver to Join the MilitaryHow to Get a Medical Waiver to Join the MilitaryNobody can tell you what your chances of waiver approval are, as you consider joining the military. Depending on your issue, it could be an easy process, like LASIK or PRK Laser Eye Surgery, or a difficult and long process for serious knee or shoulder surgeries. There is a platzdeckchen of standards you can use as a general guide, the Medical Disqualifying Ailments for Military Service form, but every waiver request is evaluated using several individual factors. No two waivers are alike. Medical Waivers The Department of Defense (DoD) sets the medical standardsfor people who wish to join the U.S. military. These standards are the same for all military branches, including the Coast Guard, as the Department of Homeland Security has agreed to use the same standards to make Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) processing easier. Beginning the Medical Exam Process The process star ts when you complete the medical pre-screening form at the recruiters office. The recruiter sends this up to MEPS, asking for a medical examination appointment. Now, MEPS does not belong to any particular branch of service. Its whats known as a joint command and operates independently from all service branches. A doctor at MEPS reviews the form. If there are any potentially disqualifying medical conditions listed, MEPS may contact the recruiter to ensure you bring a copy of your civilian medical records relevant to the condition with you to the examination. Sometimes the doctor doing the review will determine you have a medical condition that is disqualifying with little or no chance of a waiver. In such cases, MEPS may disqualify you on the spot and refuse to do the medical examination. If this happens, your journey into military service has ended. There is no appeal to this decision. It is technically possible for the recruiting commander of the service youre trying to join to go over MEPS to request a medical waiver from their medical command, but this is rare. Once your medical examination is complete, you are determined to be either medical qualified for military service, or medically disqualified for military service, according to the medical standards set by DoD. Temporary vs. Permanent Disqualifications There are two types of disqualifications temporary and permanent. permanent doesnt necessarily mean you cant join the military, and temporary doesnt mean you need a waiver. Temporary means that you currently have a disqualifying medical condition, but that will change with time. An example might be that you cant enlist with a broken toe, but once it heals, assuming no complications, the condition will no longer be disqualifying and youll be able to enlist without a waiver. Permanent means you have a disqualifying medical condition that isnt going to change with time, such as a history of depression. You cant enlist with a permanent medical disquali fication unless you receive an approved waiver. If you are found to be permanently disqualified, the MEPS doctor will indicate on your medical form whether a waiver is recommended in your case. It is the first step in the medical waiver process. When making the recommendation, the doctor will consider the following Is the condition progressive? Is the condition subject to aggravation by military service? Will the condition preclude satisfactory completion of prescribed training and subsequent military duty? Will the condition constitute an undue hazard to the exam or to others, particularly under combat conditions? Once the doctor makes a recommendation, MEPS is done with the medical waiver process. The rest is up to the service you are trying to join. Recruiting Commander Decisions The medical records and the doctors recommendation go to the recruiting commander (or designated representative) for the service youre applying to join. The commander decides whether to request a medica l waiver. In making this decision, the commander considers the doctors recommendation, along with two additional factors 1. Is the recruit exceptionally qualified otherwise? (ASVAB scores, college credits, physical fitness, and foreign language fluency could be factors.) 2. Are current recruiting goals being met? If the commander decides to ask for a waiver, where it goes from that point depends on the branch of the service youre joining. However, several layers ofmilitary medical officials review the form and records. Each doctor reviews them and recommends approval or disapprovaluntil it finally falls into the hands of a high-ranking doctor (O-6 or above)who makes the ultimate decision. If themedical waiverisdenied, thats the end of the road for any chance you have of joining that branch of service. There are no appeals to medical waiver disapproval- the waiver process is the appeal. Waiver Approval Timeline There is simply no way to guess how long it will take a waiver request to make it through the approval process. Differentwaivershave different levels of review and approval. For example, a waiver for too many traffic tickets may be approved, depending on the service, by the commander of the recruiting squadron. However, a waiver for more serious offenses may have to go all the way up the chain to the big chief of recruiting for the entire service. Amedical waiverusually must go all the way up to the services Surgeon Generals Office. A couple of things to remember The people who review/approve the waivers have other duties, so your waiver may not be a priority.Hundreds of other waivers are going through the process as well, and every application must be evaluated individually. Remember, if you require a waiver, that means you aredisqualifiedfrommilitary service. Thewaiver procedureis the process of you pleading with the military to make an exception in your particular case. Contacting Your Congressperson Under the lawand DoD regulations, the indivi dual service has the absolute right to decide whether to approve or disapprovemedical waivers, depending on the current needs of the service. A congressional inquiry wont change anything. Waiver approval/disapproval is only applicable to that particular branch of service. If the Navy denies your waiver, for example, you can walk across the hall to the Army recruiting office and its possible the Army might consider and approve a waiver. Conversely, if theNavy approvesa medical waiver, you could not use that waiver to join the Army. If a medical condition is diagnosed after youre on active duty, assuming its not apre-existing conditionthat youlied about, the military isnt going to discharge you unless a?Medical Evaluation Boarddetermines you cant perform your duties.

Being Interrupted Is Your Fault 5 Things You Can Do to Change That

Being Interrupted Is Your Fault 5 Things You Can Do to Change That When youre interrupted by someone during a conversation whether during an informal chat oran important meeting you probably assume the interrupter is to blame. Its their bad behavior, after all.In reality, the blame mora often than not lies with you, the speaker. Your listeners may be interrupting you because you take too long to get to the point or because you never pause to let them get a word in edgewise.Distracting behaviors that overpower your message may also contribute to interruptions. When your body language is inconsistent with your message, your listener may be confused by what you are saying. You probably can relate to this example The individual leading a meeting emphasizes how important it is for everyone to stay within budget to meet the clients needs, yet their posture, facial expressions, and tone of voice communicate this really isnt an emergency. When interrupted, y our natural response might be to- Jump in and interrupt the interrupter- Continue talking over the interrupter- Allow the interrupter to take control of the conversation- Ignore the situation all togetherIf youfind yourself interrupted often, its time to self-reflect. When youre frequently interrupted and unable to pull the conversation back on track, you run the risk of jeopardizing your reputation and professional relationships.Others perceive you as lacking confidence, credibility, trust, and leadership skills. No one wants to follow someone who breaks under challenging situations like interruptions. It is difficult to influence others to take action when your message isconstantly interrupted. Your ideas are worth hearing. Rather than jeopardize your influence, build it by following these steps during every conversation1. Get to the Point QuicklyThe more you say, the more you confuse, which frustrates your listeners. As their patience runs out, they may interrupt you in order to g et the information they need.In conversations, less is often more.2.Dont Let Your Passion Run AwayWhen you are passionate about a topic, you may feel compelled to tell your listener everything you know about it. You may assume your listeners are just as passionate as you are, but this is rarely true.Share your passion while keeping your message tailored to what is important to your listeners. When possible, prepare for the conversation ahead of time by considering these questions-How much knowledge of the topic does your audience have?- What is the audiences experience with your topic?- What is the audiences opinion of your topic?- What does the audience need to know to take the action you are recommending?Using the answers to these questions to guide your message will ensure you delivervalue to your listener.3. PausePause to listen to others. An influential communicator understands the power of persuasion involves saying less and listening more. When you communicate a message that i s all about you and what you want to do, you will ignite your listeners frustration. When you spend time listening, you can hear what your listener is not saying. I call it listening for the known unspoken. Pausing allows you to listen to what is important to your listener. Your listeners are less likely to interrupt when they feel you truly care about what is important to them.4. Encourage InteractionGet your listeners involved in the conversation so that they feel their opinions are heard. Interaction increases engagement and connection, which builds trust. It is difficult to interrupt someone whom you trust. Interaction also allows you to adapt your message on the fly, which is another way to communicate to your listeners you care about what is important to them.5. Appreciate FeedbackConsider the interruption a gift. An interruption is actually a friendly reminder that you need to get back on track or adapt your message to your listeners needs. Take this feedback and run with it.I n general, you can ask for feedback from family and friends you trust. Ask them to let you know when you yourself are guilty of interruption. If you tend to interrupt whether consciously or not your listeners will follow your lead and interrupt you.Interruptions can be challenging to manage, but these five action steps can help you regain control of every conversation. When you face interruptions, reflect on the situation. What worked? What didnt work? Whatare you willing to change for next time? Dealing with any challenging situation requires practice and feedback, and interruptions are no exception.Stacey Hanke is the founder and communication expert ofStacey Hanke Inc.She is the author ofInfluence Redefined Be the Leader You Were Meant to Be, Monday to MondayandYes You Can Everything You Need From A to Z to Influence Others to Take Action.

How to Cope With Life Inside a Small Cubicle

How to Cope With Life Inside a Small CubicleHow to Cope With Life Inside a Small CubicleA cubicle is a semi-private workspace with walls, a desk surface and usually bins, shelves, or drawers. Pieces of modular furniture are connected like building blocks to meet an organizations ?office space needs. Cubicles give geschftliches miteinanderes and government organizations the ability to add, remove, and reconfigure office space relatively quickly. Compared to hard-walled offices, cubicles also allow for an organization to have a smaller physical footprint thus reducing the cost of owned or leased space. Many organizations have a mix of hard-walled offices and cubicles. The more authority an employee has in an organization, the more likely the person has a hard-walled office. Positive Aspects of Cubicle Life Working in a cubicle environment has several benefits Your own space It may notlage be much, but your little piece of the office is yours. You can decorate it, however you want ( within reason, of course). If people want to find you, they know the first place to look.Meeting people If youre the new kid on the block, youll have people constantly walking by your desk. The chattier ones will introduce themselves and others to you. You can also wander around to meet people.Quick collaboration Say youre working on a project with another person or a few people. You can walk a few paces, discuss what you need to and be back at your desk in moments. Negative Aspects of Cubicle Life Working in a cubicle comes with its challenges Hard to concentrate With phones ringing and people talking, concentrating at your cubicle can be challenging.Little or no privacy You have no door and little to block sound emanating from your workspace.Small workspace All your personal equipment, supplies, and belongings have to fit in an area less than 50 square feet. You may feel a little boxed in at times.Lack of natural light Unless you have a cubicle adjacent to a window, youre unl ikely to get much natural light while youre sitting at your desk. Faux Pas in Cubicle Land People can be downright oblivious that they arent the only ones in the office. Dont be the guy who doesnt know how to act in a cubicle environment. Here are some faux pas that will draw the ire of your work neighbors Using speakerphone Sure your conference call is important, but the whole floor doesnt need to hear it. Even if you plan to be on the call for hours, never use your speakerphone during business hours. If you plan on making and receiving an inordinate amount of calls, ask your employer to provide a telephone headset.Talking loudly Other people are trying to concentrate on work, so please use your inside voice. After a while, even nosy people will get tired of hearing your conversations.Sneaking up behind people Few things are more unnerving than turning slightly and seeing someone standing right behind you. Announce your entry into someone elses workspace. Find a hard surface l ike the connector pieces of the wall to knock on. Eating smelly foods No matter how delicious you may find your reheated grilled fish, most people dont want to smell fish when theyre not eating it. Even if youre eating something that will make peoples mouths water, you dont want them to feel bad about their PBJs.Having disgusting conversations No one wants to hear about your latest mole biopsy or gynecological appointment.Doing disgusting things. Clipping your fingernails or flossing your teeth can be a multi-sensory barrage. No one wants to experience that. Tools for Surviving Cubicles Your employer will provide all the standard office supplies you need to get the job done, but there are a few youll need to maintain your sanity in the cubicle environment Headphones These are an absolute essential for working in a cubicle. Headphones can enable you to listen to audio from your computer without disturbing others. Theyre also kralley when you have a noisy neighbor. You can plug y our headphones into your computer or MP3 player to acquire a more favorable soundtrack to your day. If youre really sensitive to noise, you may want to invest in some noise-canceling headphones.Small mirror A small mirror strategically placed helps you spot people coming into your workspace before they startle you. Space heater with a groupie setting Many buildings prohibit the use of space heaters and desk fans, but people break the rules for the sake of comfort. If your building manager cant seem to keep the thermostat at a reasonable temperature, a space heater with a fan setting will help you whether the indoor temperature is too hot or too cold. If you get cold often, consider keeping a sweater, shawl, or blanket at work.Family photos Remember, you have a life after 500 p.m. Seeing your family can give you an energy boost to tackle the days challenges. And most people are interested. Dont go nuts, though. Two or three framed photos will suffice. Red stapler Just kidding, Milton . Great Cubicle Pranks Proceed with caution. Pranks can get you fired, but here are some classics Wrapping For this trick, you need several hours and a lot of newspaper. It is pretty simple. You wrap every item in the victims cubicle. Dont forget to wrap the trash can. Around Christmas, you can use gift wrap.Packing peanuts Seal up the persons cubicle entrance with plastic wrap. Dump packing peanuts into the cubicle until they reach the top of the walls. Dont try this one if the victim has an urgent assignment due that day.Rubber bands This one is much more subtle. While the victim is sitting in their desk chair, shoot a rubber band at the ceiling directly above the victim. The rubber band will fall straight down. Because the sound of the rubber band shooting off your hand is almost silent, the victim will have no idea which of his neighbors is shooting rubber bands. Shoot about one rubber band a day, varying the times of day until the victim realizes its you.

How to identify a psychopathic manager

How to identify a gefhrlicher irreric managerHow to identify a psychopathic managerPopularized by movies about morally bankrupt men on Wall Street, the myth of the psychopathic stockbroker who is able to succeed financially despite his character flaws has gone mainstream. Yes, they think greed is good. Yes, these power-hungry bullies are not role models for society. But, hey, at least theyre charming, persuasive risk-takers and good with numbers, the thinking goes.Contrary to those stereotypes, a new paper inPersonality and Social Psychology Bulletin found that hedge fund managers who showed psychopathic tendencies were actually worse investors for their clients. In the study, researchers characterized psychopathy as people who lack empathy and are impulsive and aggressive. How to identify a psychopathic managerBut how could the researchers identify who was a psychopathic force of manipulation and deception? Apparently, our body language gives us away. Instead of asking managers strai ght-up about their psychopathic tendencies, the researchers relied on coders rating nonverbal and verbal behaviors of hedge fund managers in semistructured video interviews. The study was building upon previous research that found emotional disturbances in peoples facial expression and language can expose peoples characters.Under this research, Machiavellian types use behavioral signals like expansive posture to display dominance. Narcissists make conversations all about them and use I over we. And psychopaths are prone to erratic emotional expression and will smile and take pleasure at the failures of othersIn total, the researchers identified the psychopathic, Machiavellian, and narcissistic tendencies - the so-calledDark Triad traits - in 101 hedge fund managers. Then, researchers looked to see if that affected their financial performance in 2005-2015, a 10-year period of particular economic volatility. The psychopath effectWhile Machiavellianism had no effect on financial perfo rmance, psychopathic tendencies did. Those who showed psychopathic personality traits had annualized returns of nearly 1% less than managers rated at the mean of psychopathy. The more psychopathic you were, the worse your investment return got. Extreme psychopaths, with behaviors two deviations above average, could lose money in the six-digit range. The researchers found that when an extreme psychopath invested $1 million, that investment earned $311,834 less than a manager who showed average levels of psychopathic tendencies. So why does the myth of the psychopathic stock genius endure? Researchers suggest that theyre good at getting power quickly and rising up the ranks. Psychopathic behaviors may be associated with perceptions of dominance or competence, which lead to rapid promotions in some organizations, the study states. Once in a position of power, however, psychopathic behaviors may prove counterproductive.Sooner or later, as in the third act of many of these Wall Street mov ies, the psychopath within gets revealed for all to see.
